How Kirana and Grocery Stores Can Use Social Media in Nepal

A kirana store does not need a brand video. It needs a reason for a neighbourhood to check the page before walking over, and that reason is what came in today.

Post what arrived, not what is always there

Nobody needs a reminder that you sell rice. They need to know fresh vegetables came in this morning, or that a seasonal item just landed, before it runs out.

The formats a small shop can actually keep up

None of these take more than a phone and two minutes.

  • A thirty-second walk down the aisle showing today stock.
  • Prices on a whiteboard, photographed, not typed into a caption nobody reads.
  • A short clip when a bulk or festival offer starts.
  • A reply to every price question in the comments, publicly, so the next fifty people see it too.

WhatsApp is the real storefront

Most kirana orders now start as a WhatsApp message asking what is available. A saved list of today stock, sent in seconds, wins the order before a customer even considers walking to a competitor.

Festivals are your busiest content window

Dashain, Tihar, and other festival weeks are when a neighbourhood grocery does its highest volume. Post stock and offers daily in those weeks, even roughly, rather than skipping social media because the shop is busy.

Real examples

Bad line, good line.

Most people write

A poster: "Monthly discount on groceries."

Say this instead

A thirty-second aisle walk: "Fresh saag and tomatoes came in an hour ago."

Most people write

"Rate inbox."

Say this instead

"Rice NPR 95/kg, oil NPR 280/litre, photographed off today board."

Full example

Worked example: a kirana shop in Kalanki

01Post a thirty-second stock update every morning for one week.
02Photograph your price board instead of retyping it.
03Save a daily stock list template to send instantly on WhatsApp.

Festival-week posts

Daily, even rough, during the busiest weeks.

Nobody needs a reminder that you sell rice.

A grocery store does not need to be interesting. It needs to be the one that posted this morning.

Do this week

Three things you can do now.

01Post a thirty-second stock update every morning for one week and see what happens to enquiries.
02Photograph your price board instead of retyping it.
03Save a daily stock list template to send instantly on WhatsApp.
